Oakwood Patient Turns 100, Thankful for Good Health

Wyandotte, Mich.- Few can say they’ve celebrated Thanksgiving 100 times. Mabel Smith of Grosse Ile is one of them.

In fact, Smith’s 100th birthday fell on Thanksgiving Day this year. The milestone was celebrated not only with a turkey dinner, but a party of more than 60 friends and family, who joined Smith at Frankenmuth.

Originally from Bay City, Mich. Smith moved to Grosse Ile in 2005 to be closer to her daughter, Cathleen. It was then that she became a patient of Robert Sharon, MD, at Oakwood Healthcare Center-Wyandotte.

“Mabel is the first patient that I’ve ever cared for that has lived to a healthy 100 years of age,” said Dr. Sharon. “I told her I wanted a picture of us together so I could hang it in the office.”

In addition to a strong relationship with her physician, Smith attributes her longevity to a few simple rules.

“I don’t count the days, I keep myself busy, and I eat very well,” she said.

Smith also credits her health to a glass of wine each night – cabernet in particular.

While being 100 years old has its challenges, Smith admits that she has a lot to be thankful this year.

“I’m thankful that I have good health, a good doctor and a good family, too,” she said.
