A fire at Lions & Tigers & Beers Sports Club quickly went from a smoky inferno to an all-out blaze Sunday night.

Wyandotte Fire Chief Jeff Carley said the building is a complete loss. The fire raged for hours until only a couple of hot spots were left at about 1 a.m. While some neighboring departments that came in to help were preparing to call it a night, Carley said, some crews would remain till daybreak.

No injuries were reported. Emergency responders even rescued a cat that had been stuck for hours inside a loft in an adjacent building.

Emergency crews evacuated residents in nearby buildings.

Shane Pett lives in a loft in a nearby building and was allowed back into his place to grab some personal items.

"It does smell like smoke really bad in there," he said. "That’s kinda why I don’t want to sleep there tonight. ... The power's out, too, and they said it wouldn't be back on till midday tomorrow."

Biddle Avenue was closed between Chestnut and Eureka and wasn't expected to reopen anytime soon, Carley said early Monday morning.

While the fire ended up being massive, it started quite innocently. Plumes of smoke filled LTB's at about 7 p.m., forcing about 20 customers to exit the bar.

"It got really smoky and they told us to leave," Angela Fisher of Trenton said. "We didn’t see any flames or anything like that, but there was tons of smoke."

An employee told customers that it's believed the fire started in the bar's beer room, near the back of the building.

Flames quickly overtook the bar as onlookers gathered outside.

Natalie Rankine, director of Wyandotte's Downtown Development Authority, was in tears.

"When I got here, it didn’t seem that bad," she said. "But now? ... It's heartbreaking."

The Wyandotte Fire Department called off-duty firefighters in to help battle the blaze. Other departments also were called in to assist, including Allen Park, Brownstown Township, Lincoln Park, Riverview, Rockwood, Southgate and Trenton.

"Half of Downriver is here tonight," Carley said.

The Detroit Fire Department also sent in its fire boat to pump water from the Detroit River onto the blaze.

Brownstown firefighters also used hoses to pump in water from the Detroit River to battle the blaze from the rear of the building.

Though the fire was contained to Lions & Tigers & Beers, some neighboring businesses were affected by smoke and water damage. The extent of the impact on the surrounding area is not yet clear.

"All my merchandise is a total loss," said David Hall, owner of Country Enchantments.

The size of the fire—people reported seeing it in nearby towns such as Lincoln Park—and the popularity of the bar elicited sadness and concern on social media such as Twitter and Facebook.

Tom Faryniarz came down to help put up police tape.

"I was down here, thought I should come help," Faryniarz said. "The building looks like a total loss."

Parts of Wyandotte lost power periodically because of the fire, but power was restored except for the one block of Biddle where the fire was still burning.

If you have photos from the fire, you can add them at the link above.

I am not sure if the fire spread to the other buildings. There was no mention of that in the above report. The east side of the block lost power until 9:30PM. I would worry about smoke damage for the neighboring businesses at the very least. The smoke is quite bad. I am the corner of Biddle and Sycamore (above the Jimmy Johns) and the smoke is terrible.

I agree with Brigitte. I am over on Northline and Lindbergh and the street is filled with smoke. The smell is so potent. All streets over near oak and vinewood is so thick you couldnt see. It honestly looked like ground zero! Its heartbreaking and I wish people would stop being such jerks. These are peoples business' they worked so hard for, peoples apartments above the business' and peoples memories. This affects all of the community. I met so many people from different cities. It affects all of us. And these firefighters are risking there lives. We should stand as a community and instead of fall.

Sam123. Yes, I am sure everyone knows that those commenters have not been throughout the entire city and were reporting from their own subjective vantage points. However, I doubt that their intention was to be melodramatic, cause further panic, or any harm. They were already corrected ad nauseam, so I don't see the benefit of continuing to harp on them.

When I drove thru the back lot around 8:15 last night that's where all the smoke looked like it was coming from, the balcony. I stand corrected. My wife also thought the same thing. I (we) stand corrected. So Bella Donna's was a two-story shop or was there something above it that utilized the balcony.

I was there around 545 ish and it was already going. Evacuation had already happened and two fire trucks were on scene at the moment. Two hours later I came back and it was drastically worse. Fire had gotten bigger and smoke was pouring out at a higher rate. It hasn't showed any sign of letting down yet (I left about 15 minutes ago) and smoke has filled the area. They're pulling water from 711 by the caseloads to get them to the firefighters as quickly as possible.

This is from WXYZ.com : A fire in downtown Wyandotte may be spreading. Preliminary reports indicate the blaze broke out at a bar and then jumped to other businesses near the intersection of Biddle and Oak.

Fire officials tell Action News the flames started at a bar called "Lions, Tigers and Beer" at around 5:30 Sunday evening.

At this point there are no reports of injuries and no word on the cause.

Even if fire does not spread to the other businesses in the area, any merchandise inside will be affected and smell of smoke. Sadly, that includes clothes and furniture. Also, the heat can melt walls, books and other items, etc. even if the flames never even get close. No, I am not exaggerating. I've been in a similar situation and people died! Also, I know about smoke. Some people can be covered in it and breathing it in, toxins and all. Other bodies almost next to them, a train car length away might not see or smell the flames.
PS I'm the author of "A Sideshow Journey". A significant portion of the story takes place in Wyandotte. I'd always hoped that if a movie was created from my book, Downtown Wyandotte could be used in the filming, with locals as extras. This is so sad.

Im so sad for Wyandotte right now, they are our gem in a pile of rocks so to speak, with our economy as it is, Wyandotte has somehow managed to flourish and thrive, The downtown area is just stunning in comparison to neighboring communities. Wyandotte should be very proud, i know they will survive this as they always do and i know that town will pull together and rebuild that block of downtown and probably make it even better than it was, that's just how they roll in Wyandotte.

This is so sad. We were watching the scene from inside Total Health Foods with the owners. We watched the firefighters changes shifts, take off their suits, sweat pouring off their bodies, and take a drink of water. How intense it was to watch them re-suit up then climb the ladders again.
