Local Woman Is Downriver Idol Finalist

Laurie Mata of Wyandotte is set to compete against three other finalists for the title of Downriver Idol on Sunday.

Wyandotte resident Laurie Mata will compete for the title of Downriver Idol this weekend.

Mata is one of four finalists scheduled to perform in the Downriver Idol competition at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Flat Rock Community Auditorium, 28100 Aspen Dr., Flat Rock.

Mata, who has lived in Wyandotte for 26 years, once performed in a local band called Sweet Release with Stan and Laurie.

“I never had any formal training other then singing with my mother as a child," she said, in a press release.

Mata will face off against Ramsey Katynski of Clawson, Jill Ryan of Grosse Ile and Lara Semetko of Grosse Ile. Audience members will assist four judges in selecting the winner.

In addition to the Idol performances, Maestro Charles Greenwell has selected a number of “prizewinning” compositions to be performed by the Southern Great Lakes Symphony, the group sponsoring the competition.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online or by calling 734-246-2890. Tickets will be sold at the door if the event does not sell out.
