There’s a new Mexican restaurant at 118 Sycamore in Wyandotte, the former location of Solero Café. Agave is owned by Jim Marangos, of the former Solero Café, and a new partner, Jose Fernandez.

Agave features some of Solero Café’s specialties, along with Mexican food.

“We have an extensive Mexican menu,” Fernandez said. “Everything we make is from scratch. Nothing comes from a can.”

At the grand opening on Thursday, the biggest compliment Agave received was for its enchilada sauce. The enchilada sauce features ancho peppers and spices and is very thick and rich, he said.

The grand opening went very well, and Agave was almost full.

“Everybody had a wonderful time,” Fernandez said. “I was very pleased.”

Agave is a very family-oriented restaurant, he said. The most expensive dishes on the menu, salmon and steak, are about $13.

“We’re very competitively priced with other restaurants in the area,” Fernandez said.

In addition, there are daily specials and a children’s menu. This week, Friday’s special is tamales, and Saturday’s is chiles relenos.

And kids can order foods such as chicken strips, burritos, enchiladas, tacos and more a la carte at discounted prices.

Fernandez has owned other Mexican restaurants, the last one in New York. Although he was born in the U.S., his parents were from Mexico.

“We’ve owned a few restaurants,” he said.

He met his wife, Mary, in New York. Her grandparents were from Wyandotte, Fernandez said.

“We love Wyandotte,” he said.

He has an agreement to eventually take full ownership of Agave from Jim Marangos, who is moving Solero Café to Saugatuck, he said.

Inside Agave, the restaurant has a Texan, Mexican flair, Fernandez said. The floor is wooden, which is good for dancing later at night, he added. The colors are earthy for a warmer atmosphere.

In addition, live music will include a small mariachi band for classical Mexican music, as well as jazz, pop and blues groups, Fernandez said.

As for drinks, Agave has a selection of different tequilas for margaritas, including some very high-end tequilas, he said. Margarita flavors are strawberry, peach, raspberry, mango and more.
