Should Michigan become a right-to-work state?

That’s a question that may face legislators in Lansing after Gov. Rick Snyder said Tuesday that right-to-work legislation is on “his agenda.”

State Democrats went on the defensive Wednesday, saying they would oppose any right-to-work laws—even if it meant litigation.

Right-to-work legislation effectively would end closed union shops, according to the Detroit Free Press. According to Businessweek, the laws usually let workers refuse to pay union dues.

Not sure why you would ever think being a Right To Work state is a good idea...unless you like getting paid less for the work you do. The only ones that benefit from Right To Work legislation are the employers

I think right to work is ok, if you dont want to join why should you be forced to pay for it...Im a non-union worker working in a UAW based plant..and its amazing how people dont appreciate what they have as union workers and feel hey are intiteled to so much more, its mind boggling..if they were to loose their union job they would starve! NOT all but most!, I do work with some union people who are eagar to work, self starters and appreciate what they have, but its not many...

Here we go again with union-hating. As with any situation, there are good employees and bad. Whenever there is a bad union employee, the anti-union drumbeat starts and it's time to criticize all unions and organized labor. I am sure MOST union employees in the auto industry and other organized labor appreciate their jobs and union benefits. Unfourtunately, many unions have been forced to give up massive concessions recently with the economic crisis and rising health care costs (which have finally bottomed-out--lowest rise in decades---after health care reform was enacted). So, I understand and sympathize with many union workers who are just trying hard every day to make ends meet and do their job.

As Jerry articulated, organized labor is here for a reason. It is not some kind of 'scam' or socialist entity. Unions protect workers' rights and ensure they are paid fairly for a job well done. This is not China. Here in the USA we do not sell-out to the lowest bidder, we treat our workers with the dignity and respect they deserve regardless of your position. In addition, unions self-enforce a standard of work that mutually benefits the company and the employees as a whole.

Yes, there are bad apples as is the case everywhere. Making Michigan a 'right-to-work' state only benefits corporate greed and leave all workers at a disadvantage.

Those nasty, heartless SOBs in Lansing are slowly turning Michigan into Alabama.

Im not a union hating person, I just see way too much taking advantage of the system, and not enought quality driven individuals who really care about the work in which they represent..its that simple..and as far as Huge concessions go , the only individualls I believe have given true concessions and deserve to preserve all they ave fought for are the men and women that go out and protect us from harm evereyday...Police Fire EMS etc... Sorry I just dont feel for the people that come to work to go find their hiding spot so they can sleep for eight hours, and do absolutely nothing.. they deserve to give more concessions...hey dfinitely deserve to be unemployed.....

I have been a firefighter in the great state of Michigan for nearly twenty years and I have never seen an attack on unions like we face now. We have taken concessions and every surrounding community has done the same, since Snyder took office there has been nothing but negative affects on my career and those whom I serve. Snyder only has one agenda and that's to bust down unions at any expense whether that be safety or the education of our children. And please don't forget our teachers who have been dumped on since Snyder took office, they have been hit the hardest and are continuing to get screwed, when the teachers suffer the kids suffer. Try teaching 35 second graders and have them learn, its insane but the governor thinks its okay because the districts are saving money. It's all about the bottom dollar who cares whom it affects. Be aware what may happen to the future of our state if this continues especially with RTW. Just my two cents.
