STATE CHAMPS: Wyandotte Bears Win First-Ever State Hockey Title

Wyandotte outskates Brother Rice, 4-1, in Division 2 state hockey championship game at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

The Bears hockey team won the school's first-ever Division 2 state championship title Saturday morning.

The Bears' 2010-11 regular season was the best in the school's history and Saturday morning, the team secured a trophy to prove it after beating Birmingham Brother Rice, 4-1, in the final game at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

Senior co-captain Nicholas Kovalchik got the action started by scoring two goals in the first period, followed by fellow senior co-caption Gerald Mayhew's goal in the second period and senior co-captain Kyle King’s goal in the third period.

The arena is packed with blue and gold from Wyandotte fans and alumni who traveled to watch their school lift the trophy on the ice.
