Megan Maiani received the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year Award from the Wyandotte Jaycees on Saturday night.

The honor was given during the Wyandotte Women of the Year gala at the Wyandotte Arts Center.

Maiani is a children’s counselor for Camp Quality with the American Cancer Society and has worked on the group's signature fundraising event, Relay for Life. She blogged for Wyandotte Patch during last year's Wyandotte Relay for Life.

While Relay for Life isn't coming to Wyandotte this year, Maiani said, she plans to continue campaigning for cancer awareness around the state.

Maiani is pursuing a nursing degree at the Mercy College of Nursing, and she is serving her internship at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn.

"Ms. Maiani has a strong motivation in making sure that her community and the children in the community have healthy future to pass along her passion," the Jaycees said in a written statement.

As the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year, Maiani is now one of the contenders for the Michigan Jaycees Outstanding Young Michigander Award and potentially, the Ten Outstanding Young American Award from the U.S. Jaycees.

The Outstanding Young Michigander program was started in 1955 by the Michigan Jaycees to recognize local community leaders around the state. Past recipients of the national award have included Elvis Presley, Pat Boone, Ann Bancroft, Joe Louis and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).
