Wyandotte Children Give Fundraiser for Japan a Big Boost

$2,800 was collected citywide for the American Red Cross' Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund.

Several children led the way for Wyandotte’s collection to help the earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan.

During a three-week donation drive, the city raised $2,800 for the American Red Cross’ Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund.

Of that, $1,070 was collected by Wyandotte students. raised $570 through a pajama day and brought in $500 through a coin drive.

“The future of Wyandotte is in very good–and kind– hands,” said employee Sarah Schwochow, who oversaw the citywide collection.

In addition to the children’s efforts, several Wyandotte businesses had donation canisters in their establishments during the drive. Contributions also were dropped off directly to the city.

A Red Cross staffer is expected to attend tonight's City Council meeting to accept the check.

Since 1963, Wyandotte and Komaki, Japan have been sister cities. Their ties have included a student exchange program and official visits back and forth.

"Komaki was affected by the aftershocks rippling from the 8.9 magnitude earthquake," Schwochow wrote in a letter to city officials. "Not to mention, there are many citizens of our sister city who have lost loved ones in this tragedy, and the city of Komaki as a whole is mourning."

The death toll is at 13,000, with thousands more still missing.
