Wyandotte Teen Boy Struck by Train

A 14-year-old student was struck by a train near Oak and Ninth streets Tuesday afternoon.

According to Police Chief Daniel Grant, Jacob Marion was walking along the tracks when a CN Railroad train struck him shortly after 4:30 p.m.

The teen was dragged by the train, which was traveling north at 28 mph.

Police said the teen might not have even realized a train was approaching.

"(Our) preliminary investigation into the incident indicates that he was walking northbound on the railroad tracks approximately 50 yards north of Oak Street while wearing an iPod and headphones," Grant said. "The train’s engineer blew the whistle several times to warn the victim prior to impact."

He was transported via Life-Flight to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he was said to be undergoing surgery at about 7:30 p.m. Police said his condition is grave to critical.

This comes mere hours after in an unrelated rollover accident at Oak and 4th streets.

School Superintendent Carla Harting said grief counselors and social workers would be at the school Wednesday.

"This is very difficult on both our students and staff members," she said. "We will be there to support anybody who needs it."

The train tracks are within earshot of the Harting said people were inside the office, but did not hear anything when the collision occurred.

"It's just awful," she said. "I can't even imagine going through this."

CN spokesman Patrick Waldron called the incident "tragic."

"The crew sounded the horn and attempted to stop, but were unable to stop in time," he said. "The incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers of trespassing on railroad tracks."
