Dozens of people combed through downtown Wyandotte on Saturday looking for clues in hopes of winning prizes. In conjunction with the Detroit Institute of Arts' Inside|Out project, the Wyandotte Downtown Development Authority and the Downriver Council for the Arts sponsored the Downtown Wyandotte Art Scavenger Hunt. Teams ran around the city for two hours and were awarded points for performing various tasks, including using sidewalk chalk to draw an interpretation of an art piece, creating a toilet paper robe, completing a puzzle, purchasing specific items in downtown businesses and sitting next to a stranger in a restaurant. If you're a Bank of America cardholder, clear your schedule this weekend: The national bank is hosting a program aimed to remove the burden of ticket prices from those wishing to visit local museums. Museums On Us takes place Saturday and Sunday. During the weekend, Bank of America cardholders nationwide will have the chance to visit more than 150 museums for free. In Metro Detroit, that includes the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Children’s Museum, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Detroit Science Center, the Flint Institute of Arts and the Motown Museum. See how interior designers get clever with books galore in various rooms at the Junior League of Detroit Grosse Pointe Shores' home tour, which opens Saturday.
Books seem to be everywhere. Not only are they in homes and on bookshelves, but paperbacks and hardcovers aplenty are also adorning window displays at apparel shops and boutiques and in fashion designer and home-furnishings ad campaigns. There's even book-page wallpaper. Books are wearable, too. Kate Spade, in fact, introduced clutches that replicate classic tomes, from Romeo and Juliet to Emma to The Importance of Being Earnest. Is this our way of holding on to physical books in our Nook-ish, Kindle-ized world of “E?” Perhaps, and that may be why many of the designers at the Junior League of Detroit's (JLD) 2012 Show House used books in a variety of displays. The artwork of 13 Roosevelt High School students will be displayed at the Detroit Public Library.
The artwork of several Roosevelt High School students will be on display at the main branch of the Detroit Public Library. The 13 Wyandotte students join dozens of others from Michigan's 13th Congressional district in the Artistic Discovery Contest, a nationwide high school arts competition sponsored by the members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The 2012 competition is co-chaired by U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke, whose 13th District includes Wyandotte. In addition to being a lawmaker, Clarke holds a bachelor's degree in fine arts for painting from Cornell University. “As an artist and lawmaker, I deeply appreciate the dedication, effort and sacrifice required to create works of art," Clarke said. Roosevelt High School students performed at the Detroit Institute of Arts on free admission Sunday.
More than 100 Wyandotte residents visited the Detroit Institute of Arts on Sunday during a free admission day sponsored by the DIA's Inside|Out project. Residents also could bring friends to partake in some of the planned activities, including workshops, drawing, tours and family-friendly performances. The Wyandotte Jazz Ensemble and Wyandotte African Drum and Dance Ensemble, which consist of Roosevelt High School students, performed outside the DIA from noon to 1 p.m. Natalie Rankine, director of Wyandotte's Downtown Development Authority, said the high school music added a great atmosphere to the artsy environment. Wyandotte residents can enjoy an afternoon of free fun in Detroit on Sunday. In conjunction with the Detroit Institute of Arts' Inside|Out project, Wyandotte residents can tour the DIA for free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All activities are included, but specially ticketed exhibitions are not. Some of the planned activities include drop-in workshops, drawing, tours and family-friendly performances. Residents must show a valid driver’s license or state ID to receive four free general admissions. Guests needn't live in Wyandotte as long as someone in the party is a resident. In a couple of weeks, the Junior League of Detroit (JLD) will open the doors to its 2012 Designers’ Show House, located at 22 Webber Place in Grosse Pointe Shores. The house will also feature fully landscaped gardens, a boutique, café and a greenery garden area, with items for sale. For several weeks, dozens of interior designers, painters, electricians, maintenance professionals, boutique staff and more have been coming and going at the massive 10,304-square-foot house, which was built in 1928 as the home of Oscar Webber, nephew of Joseph L. More than 100 people went on guided tours over the weekend to view the Inside|Out art pieces.
More than 100 people came out over the weekend for a guided tour of the seven art pieces installed in downtown Wyandotte through the Detroit Institute of Art's Inside|Out program. Six narrated Art Walk tours took place Saturday and Sunday. Attendeeds rode the trolley to view each piece of artwork, where volunteers were on hand to speak about each painting. The tour also included a stop at the Wyandotte Arts Center to check out the Artistic Creator's Guild Art Show and to listen to The Royal Garden Trio, which plays the original tune Miss Bliss from the DIA commercials.
