Who Gets $100 to Spend as They Wish in Wyandotte?

Wyandotte Patch announces the first winner in our 'Patch the Town' contest.

Congratulations to Courtney Ruddock for winning Wyandotte Patch's first "Patch the Town" contest. She will receive a $100 gift card to use at Wyandotte businesses of her choice. In her entry, Ruddock said she'd spend the money on "Fried Pickles and IPA at Sports (Brew Pub) of course!!!" We're thinking she'll have a few bucks left over, so we asked her where the rest might be spent. "(A) possible bike ride pub crawl in the near future for me and a couple friends," she said. "And maybe (a) pedicure at one of the local salons. I've been wanting to try the new salon that just opened on Biddle recently (3152 Studio). I'm so excited!" Ruddock will document her night out with photos and a short story, which will be posted on our site in the …

Fine Things is gearing up to be "mobbed" Wednesday and is offering extra incentives to get people into their store. The women's and home accessory shop won an online vote and will be the site of Wyandotte Patch's first cash mob. Similar to a flash mob, a cash mob involves a lot of people assembling at once. But they assemble with the almighty dollar in hand. For a couple hours on a particular day, we'll converge on a Wyandotte shop with our wallets open. From 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, there will be games, prizes and fun for all who stop by. You could win a $20 gift certificate just for coming out. In addition to the two-hour cash mob, Fine Things will be offering a number of daylong specials, including: Come out, have a good time, support a …

The Dirty Dozen: 12 Tips for Spring Cleaning

We peek into the wash buckets of some of the areas savviest spring cleaners, who reveal 12 great tips to help clean up your act.

When interior designer Brian Clay Collins  of Grosse Pointe embarks on his annual spring-clean at his northern Michigan home, it’s with glass cleaners, vinegar and lint-free towels in-hand, among other things. “The absolute requirement for clean wood floors is warm water with a bit of white vinegar, used with a big sponge rinsed frequently,” said Collins, who owns Brian Clay Collins Design. “This is all done, alas, on hands and knees!!” Like hundreds of other homeowners who now are focusing on sprucing up, freshening and deep-cleaning their homes, Collins swears by favorite products. For example, he prefers Glass Plus for cleaning glass “becaue it’s ammonia-free, so less likely to damage the silvering on mirrors.” Dr. Jennifer Bonde, owner…

Improving Your Home? State Reminds Homeowners to Verify Contractors, Pull Permits

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs asks homeowners to double check their contractor's license, pull the correct permit and hold off on advance payments before starting any renovations this summer.

Not every family has a Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor in it, and those that do might prefer the skills of a hired professional anyway. But before you start on any home improvement projects this summer, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs has a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind. Before hiring (and paying) a contractor for your desired project, LARA recommends you double and triple check your chosen contractor is properly licensed. “Selecting a properly licensed contractor is the first and most important step in making home improvements,” LARA Director Steven Hilfinger said in a written statement. “Ask to see a copy of their license then take a few minutes to look up the license online or give us a call. Those few …

Wyandotte Councilwoman Going to D.C. to Rally for Home Ownership

As a federal coordinator with the National Association of Realtors, Sheri Sutherby-Fricke is going to the nation's capitol for the Rally to Protect the American Dream, taking place Thursday.

On the day after a report showed that the sale prices of homes and condos in metro Detroit are on the rise, a Wyandotte councilwoman is heading to the nation's capitol to rally on the importance of home ownership. Councilwoman Sheri Sutherby-Fricke, who works as a Realtor, said she, too, has seen the number of home sales increase lately, along with the dollar amounts attached to those sales. "We are seeing it earlier than it was projected to be seen," she said. "I think we’ve bottomed out. The numbers are still roller-coaster riding, but they’re going up as they're roller-coaster riding." Median sale prices rose last month to $70,000 in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston counties, a 1.6-percent rise from March. The new median is nearly …

I think that's a pretty simplistic view. Sheri works as a REALTOR and is going to a REALTOR rally. She earns her living as a REALTOR and can stand up for REALTOR issues whenever she wants to. Council members are volunteers and are paid nothing for the work they do on the council. That alone deserves credit. I applaud Sheri for caring about everything she is involved with, including what she makes…   more ›
