Community Corner

Bacon Memorial Library is a Sight to be Seen

The architecture is beautiful to look at and is a great asset to the city.

has always been a highlight of the community in my eyes. Not only is it a great library, but also an amazing example of the architecture that once filled the landscape in this town so many years ago.

Built in 1897 by Edward Ford, who at the time was president of the Michigan Alkali Company, the original structure consisted of 27 rooms, 11 fireplaces, oak paneling and a tower ascending to a fourth level. While many renovations have taken place over the years, the building remains an amazing asset to the landscape of our city.

Walking around the front end of the library, you feel as if you are walking back in time. Many of the original light fixtures, fireplaces and wood moldings still remain intact and add so much to the feel of the library. There also are many somewhat secluded areas to find yourself lost in your favorite book or magazine.

Included in this week's column are some photographs I took recently while walking around the library. Enjoy the photos, but by all means, go see the library for yourself.
