May Is National Bike Month: How ‘Bicycle Friendly’ is Michigan?

Michigan dropped a couple of points in the state ranking this year.

Michigan ranks as 14th friendliest state for bicycling among the 50 U.S. states, down two places from 2013, in a newly released ranking by The League of American Bicyclists.

The Bicycle Friendly State ranking looks at legislation and enforcement, policies and programs, infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement and planning.

For the seventh year in a row, Washington state led the nation, but states like Utah, Minnesota and California moved up the ranking in 2014, shaking up the top 10, the group said.

The least-friendly states for bicycling were Alabama, Montana and Kentucky, which were 50th, 49th and 48th, respectively.
