NRA Personal Safety Workshop Comes to Wyandotte

Saturday class will discuss psychology of criminals and self-defense training methods.

Experts agree that people stand a much better chance of preventing criminal attacks if they develop a safety plan before they need it. The Refuse to be a Victim workshop believes that people need to be prepared to ensure their own personal safety. The workshop is conducted by Lisa Orick-Martinez, a National Rifle Association regional training counselor, and will make a stop in Wyandotte from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the former firehouse, 2011 Oak St.

Orick-Martinez normally conducts seminars in New Mexico, but her sister, Cindie Loucks, lives in Wyandotte and asked her to come give  a seminar here. Loucks owns Animal Aunt Pet Sitting and thought her customers could benefit from a personal safety workshop.

Orick-Martinez said the workshop is perfect for single people, people who live in apartments, teenagers, parents and anyone who travels. Although Orick-Martinez is a counselor for the NRA, she said the workshop has nothing to do with firearms. She said the group will discuss ways to make your home safer through the use of locks, lights and landscaping.

"This workshop will give people techniques to make them less likely to be a victim or target of crime," she said. "We want people to be safe, but not terrified."

Participants in the workshop can expect to cover five topics during the class:
