Patch Picks: 5 Nonprofit Organizations Making a Difference

Charitable groups in the area help each other and the community.

Over the years, many nonprofit organizations have been created to serve the needs of others. Certain groups exist to assist members, while others are intended to help entire communities. Wyandotte is currently home to several nonprofit groups. Among them are organizations providing services like meals, medical care and college tuition assistance. Below are five nonprofit organizations working to make a difference in the city of Wyandotte.

Wyandotte Clinic for the Working Uninsured

The Wyandotte Clinic for the Working Uninsured provides health care for working adults without medical coverage. Volunteer physicians, nurses and other medical professionals run the clinic. Services available are routine office visits, foot care, nutrition counseling, work physicals and referrals to other facilities. Women are eligible for a well-woman checkup, which includes a Pap test and breast exam. Patients are required to be at least 18 years old and must present proof of employment. For more information, call 734-365-3560 or visit www.wyandotteclinic.com.

Individuals with developmental disabilities or cognitive impairments receive support at Arc Downriver. The group works to raise awareness to the fact that people with such special needs can still live normal lives. Arc Downriver works to achieve this by providing such services as family support, recreational activities and social services assistance. Anyone interested in contacting Arc Downriver can call 734-283-0710 or visit downriverarc.org.

The Downriver Community Food Pantry provides hunger assistance to those in need. It is located in Doherty Hall, which is affiliated with Wyandotte’s St. Patrick Catholic Church. Food is given away from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Those coming for assistance can use the back alley to access the building. A referral from either a church or social services agency must be shown to obtain food. The pantry can be contacted at 734-281-6733.

WAG Animal Rescue provides an outlet for homeless cats and dogs to be adopted. Certain group members act as foster owners, caring for rescued animals in their own homes. Pictures of animals ready for adoption are posted on the group’s website. The site also contains all necessary information for perspective owners and interested volunteers. WAG members also use local media outlets and adoption shows to feature available animals. For more information, visit WAG at www.waganimalrescue.com.

RHS Alumni Football Club

Many football players at Roosevelt High School fully dedicate themselves to the gridiron and the classroom. Despite the hard work, college scholarships are still out of reach for most players. The RHS Alumni Football Club works year round to try and change that. Money raised goes toward college scholarships for those players not offered or awarded one. A portion of money raised also is donated to help the current season’s team handle equipment costs. The group can be found online at www.rhsalumniclub.com or on Facebook.
