Patch Picks: 5 People Providing Outstanding Service in Wyandotte

People serving the community include a carpenter, umpire, councilwoman and a historical tour facilitator.

In honor of Labor Day, Wyandotte Patch is recognizing five people for great service they have provided to the city. The honorees are people who have who gone well above and beyond the call of duty for the sake of Wyandotte. Overall, each of their contributions has gone toward one common goal—making the city a better place.

The following five people were picked based on reader submissions and staff choices:

Shirley Prygoski

Wyandotte Patch reader Mary Washko nominated , the tour facilitator for Wyandotte’s historic Ford-MacNichol Home. Washko said she picked Prygoski due to her friendliness, wide range of historical knowledge and her willingness to share that knowledge with everyone. The Ford-MacNichol home is part of the , which also includes the Marx Home, the Burns Home and the Old Timer’s Long Cabin.

Mark Havlicsek

Wyandotte Patch reader Terri Havlicsek nominated her husband Mark Havlicsek, who is a carpenter by trade. For a discounted rate, he is currently building a porch for the historic Antoine Labadie House. He has also recently done work on Wyandotte Museum campus buildings and the clubhouse. Volunteering his skills, he built some of the staircases used in last year’s haunted house.

Richard Miller

As a Wyandotte Cable TV volunteer, Richard Miller records many city meetings and public events for residents to view at home. Aside from his work behind the camera, Miller is also president of the Wyandotte Democratic Club. In March, he spoke on behalf of U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, with a certificate of congressional recognition for earning a state title and all-state academic honors. 

Steve Semetko

Steve Semetko has worked as a field official for youth and adult sports in Wyandotte for more than six decades. This year, to be installed at Memorial Park’s lighted softball field. Currently he umpires youth baseball, adult recreation league softball and is a youth football referee.

Sheri Sutherby-Fricke

Aside from serving a second term on city council, Sheri Sutherby-Fricke has also founded the nonprofit group . The mission of the group is to help women achieve a better quality of life by focusing on education, health, family, community and spirituality. So far the group has hosted guest speakers and has held workshops on such topics as nutrition and resume writing.
