Patch Picks: 5 Youth Summer Programs

Painting, dancing and a trip to Turtle Cove are among the many summer activities offered in Wyandotte.

Many parents like to keep their kids active during the summer months. This can mean learning something new or maybe just joining other children for some fun. Either way, Wyandotte has plenty to keep them busy when the school year ends.

Here are five  summer program offerings in Wyandotte.

1.

Kids ages 3 to 18 can learn tap, jazz or ballet this summer at Great Technique Dance Academy. The summer program is a condensed version of what is taught during the fall and winter months. Classes meet once a week and begin in mid-June. The program lasts for seven weeks and ends in mid-August.

The summer program at St. Patrick Child Care Center accepts children from ages 3 to 12. Staff members lead kids on several walking trips within the community. , and nearby playgrounds are among the destinations. Older children swim at once a week. The program runs from mid-June to late August and is open to everyone. A flexible payment option is available for parents.

A four-day art program at the Copeland Center is available to all children heading into grades kindergarten through fifth. Each of the four sessions will last two hours. Some of the activities planned are painting, drawing, woodworking and jewelry making. The camp will take place in mid-July, but exact dates have not been determined. The Wyandotte Recreation Department offers the Green Box Playground Program. It is a free, fully supervised program for residents only. Games, sports and crafts are among the activities each day. The program begins in late-June and lasts for six weeks. It will take place at F.O.P. Park, V.F.W. Park, and Jaycees Park. Also part of this program are field trips to places like Ford Field, an alpaca farm and a trout farm. An additional fee is charged for field trips. Call 734-324-7295 for more details.

An eight-week summer program runs from June 20 to Aug. 12 at the Salvation Army Corps Community Center. Kids ages 6 to 14 are allowed to participate. A gym, game room and arts and crafts all keep kids busy indoors. A small park located behind the building allows for outdoor recreation. Field trips include bowling, laser tag and a visit to Turtle Cove. A three-day camping trip also is organized for the 11- to 14-year-olds. The program is open to everyone and financial assistance may be available to those who qualify.
