Whiz Kids: Girl Scout Walks the Walk to Support Friend

Fifth-grader Erin Crnkovich was inspired by a friend to raise money to fight diabetes.

Erin Crnkovich

  •  Whiz Kid’s Age: 10
  • Whiz Kid’s School:
  • Whiz Kid’s Accomplishment: After Erin’s close friend, Megan, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes, Erin captained a team in a fundraising walk sponsored by the American Diabetes Association. As team captain, Erin was responsible for recruiting walkers and raising money. She sold silly bands, organized a mismatch day at school and gave a Power Point presentation to her school to raise awareness and get pledges. Erin’s team, “Megan’s Magical Marchers,” had 25 walkers and raised $3,550.36. Erin personally raised $298.
  • Whiz Kid’s Key to Awesomeness: Motivated by her previous project, Erin continues to fight diabetes. She has chosen to pursue a Bronze Award, the highest award a Girl Scout of her age can earn. She is currently planning a "healthy living fair" to help younger Girl Scouts learn about making good choices with food and exercise. Erin has games planned, information to share and healthy snacks to serve. She hopes this fair encourages a healthy lifestyle for the younger Girl Scouts, helping to prevent Type II diabetes and other health issues, as well. Erin uses her brain, heart, energy and enthusiasm to help cure a condition that is affecting a friend.
