Wyandotte Parents Teach Children Life Lessons Through Charity, Volunteerism

A Facebook group created by Wyandotte parents has turned into a charity and volunteer group that uses giving back to the community as a way to teach their children important life lessons.

Amid the music and dancing at Thursday's Farmers Market stood Wyandotte parent Kate Brunnelson watching her son, Keller, raise money for charity.

Keller wasn't the only child selling lemonade to raise money for charity. He was flanked on all sides by other children and their parents who also believe giving back to the community is a remarkable way to teach children valuable life lessons in a fun, interactive environment.

About six months ago, Brunnelson and some of her close friends created a Facebook group called Family Giving, where local parents meet, create and plan charity and volunteer efforts, in which they and their children can participate.

The group raised $135 from selling lemonade to those visiting the farmers market. The money will go to purchase gift bags to be donated to the Wyandotte fire and police departments and local hospitals, which can then distribute the gift bags as they see fit.

The group meets every other month to come up with a new opportunity to give back to the community, and carry out the plan the following month. Before the lemonade stand, the group held a book drive for the Guidance Center in Southgate and picked weeds and cleaned up at the Taylor Conservatory in Taylor.

Brunnelson said Family Giving gets bigger all the time. The group is private, but is always looking for new members. To get an invite or to find out how to get more involved, email Kate Brunnelson at katescheller@att.net.
