Wyandotte Woman is a Finalist for a North American Hairstyling Award

The North American Hairstyling Award is one of the most prestigious hairstyling awards in the county and beyond. This year's host for the awards ceremony is Mario Lopez.

Lauren Moser of Wyandotte is one of five stylists in North America to be considered for one of the most prestigious awards in hairstyling.

Moser, 32, is a finalist in the texture category for a North American Hairstyling Award. She's up against stylists from New York, NY; Newport Beach, CA; Provo, UT and Dallas, TX.

Stylists participating in the contest entered three models in a litany of categories including hair color, editorial, contemporary classic and avant garde, to name a few.

Moser was most excited about an Afro, a hairstyle made up of tight curls that surround the head in a circle, that she created out of synthetic hair for her model, Leila D'Amato.

"When I created mine, I wanted to create a shape," Moser said. "I was looking for it to jump off the page, so I was more concerned with the overall shape."

Fellow stylists Becky Burnett and Christa Buie at Salon 621 in Southgate, where Moser works and hones her skills, were excited to hear of the nomination.

Buie said she wasn't shocked when she found out Moser was selected as a finalist, "because she's very talented."

"I feel overjoyed by Lauren's accomplishments," Burnett said. "This is a huge award in the hairstyling community, and it always feels good to see one of your coworkers succeed."

Actor and television personality Mario Lopez recently agreed to host this year's awards ceremony to be held on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, NV.

Moser plans to attend the black-tie awards ceremony, which was created by the Professional Beauty Association.

The PBA is the largest organization of salon professionals whose purpose is to advance the industry by providing members with education, charitable outreach, government advocacy, events and more, according to the PBA website.

"This is my first entry," Moser said. "I was, kind of, blown away. Usually, people enter more than once."

Moser hopes the nomination will help her branch into the education side of hairstyling to help other stylists get a shot at the award.

"You don't win money, but that (award) opens a lot of doors," Moser said.
