Why Garden With Your Kids?

On our Spring Break To Do List was to plant some seeds that we later transferred outside to the garden.

My daughter absolutely loves to get her hands dirty. In fact, while we were planting and her little hands were full of dirt she said: “Oh, I just love having nature all over my hands!”

She is so sweet! I'm so happy to have a gardening buddy that loves digging in the dirt as much as I do.

I was thinking about all the benefits ones derives from gardening. I'll share a few of them.

Benefits of Indoor Gardening with Your Children:
Family Bonding - Gardening is a great way for the family to spend time together! Make it a fun experience!!
Sense of Accomplishment - Gardening can provide a sense of accomplishment and pride as children watch their seeds grow into plants.
Reduces Stress! - We all need less stress in our lives. Stress relief comes from digging in the dirt.
Teaches Patience - In this day and age of instant gratification, waiting for seeds to sprout is a great lesson in patience. Although, planting some quick growing seeds, such as sunflowers will help to keep your child motivated.
Science lesson -Use gardening as an opportunity to talk to your kids about the life cycle of plants.
Increases Responsibility – Create a schedule for watering and how much to water. (My daughter over watered one of her little pots and turned the dirt into soupy mud.... thankfully it recovered from the near death trauma.
One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides.  ~W.E. Johns
After only waiting 4 short days, the sunflower seeds started to sprout. My daughter was thrilled!!

So glad we were able to spend some time planting our seeds and now can see the fruitage of our labor in our own backyard.

Happy Gardening to you and your family!
~Betty
