Evie’s Tamales Bring the Taste of Mexicantown to Wyandotte

The chicken, pork and spicy pork tamales are a hit at the market and at Evie's restaurant in Detroit.

Back this week after a vacation, look no further than the for a taste of Evie’s Tamales.

Evie’s famous tamales from southwest Detroit are sold by Taylor brothers Michael and Jacob Grimaldo, 28 and 19, respectively, at the Wyandotte market, as well as at the Riverview and Brownstown farmers markets.

The chicken, pork and spicy pork tamales come with hot or mild sauce for $8 dozen and are ready to be eaten immediately or brought home to be shared with family or friends. (Or for your own dinner and late-night snack.)

Evie’s sold tamales last year at the Taylor Farmers Market and did well, co-owner Diana Cooley said. The Taylor market was canceled this year, so the business was happy to be asked to participate at the Wyandotte market, Cooley said.

Cooley, along with co-owner Irene Garza, said the opportunity to participate in the Wyandotte market has been bringing in new customers.

“People call us to make sure (we) are going to be at the Wyandotte Farmers Market, rather than (having to) drive to Mexicantown,” Cooley said.

The market has been another outlet for steady business. With the restaurant being open seven days a week, Cooley said, they get calls for orders all the time.

Visit the Evie’s Tamales stand at the Wyandotte Farmers Market through October. The market is held weekly, from noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays, at the corner of First and Elm streets.
