Find Fine Things in New Downtown Wyandotte Shop

After years of working together, two longtime friends fulfill a goal of opening their own gift shop.

“Just Do It” may be the slogan for a popular athletic outfitter, but it also could be the motto of Fine Things, a new gift shop in downtown Wyandotte.

After all, owners Debby Ouellette and Mieka Wheeler spent years working together at another Downriver gift shop, all the while dreaming that one day they would have a chance to open their own store.

They did just that earlier this summer, opening the shop along Sycamore, just west of Biddle Avenue.

“It’s been great,” Wheeler said. “We’ve been great friends for a long time, so to do this together is great. Plus, Wyandotte has been very supportive.”

Because the two worked together for so long, both said they got a good idea of how they want to run their store–and how they don’t want to run it. With that in mind, the entire shop has been designed from the ground up to meet those ideas.

Rather than a cluttered store with a service center pushed off to the side, for instance, visitors to the store will find a custom-designed service island right in the middle. From there, display cases full of colorful items ring the store, all while soothing music plays.

Similarly, Wheeler and Ouellette are just as selective when it comes to picking items for the store, which they select by attending shows or going through specific catalogs.

In terms of inventory, Fine Things sells a wide array of unique items, from jewelry and purses to scarves, lotions and other body accessories.

“These are really unique items you’re just not going to find everywhere you go,” Ouellette.

One of the featured items at the shop are Beatiz Ball silver pieces, which are far from just decorative pieces that get used once or twice a year on special occasions. The variety of bowls, platters and plates are designed to go from the freezer to the oven to the serving table.

Another hot item Wheeler and Ouellette talked about are Spartina purses, with Fine Things being the only local carrier of the designer handbags. Likewise, the store is one of the few to carry Lady Primrose, a line of higher-end lotions and body ointments.

Among the most unique items in the store are hand-blown glass artworks from Kitras. The glass bulbs are available in all different colors and appear to show different shapes and pictures depending upon the angle at which they’re viewed.

The store is located at 110 Sycamore, between and . For more information, call Ouellette or Wheeler at 734-281-1100.
