Firefighter-Themed Sandwich Shop Employees Fully Involved in Prep for Grand Opening in Wyandotte

Axe n Ladder Deli in Downtown Wyandotte is set to open next week.

"Whoa, that's strong!"

Employee Sam Vick, 24, of Wyandotte, taste tested French fry dips Wednesday in anticipation of the opening of a new sandwich shop on Biddle Avenue in Wyandotte.

"Maybe, a little too strong," Vick said wincing.

Vick began working at Axe n Ladder Deli, 3203 Biddle Ave., at the beginning of June. Owner Ted Copley hadn't settled on a title for Vick--yet. At that moment, his title was dip taste tester.

Copley, 37, of Wyandotte, hopes to open his sandwich shop as early as next week.

He said he has almost everything ready including building inspections and decor. He anticipates a passing grade from the Michigan Department of Community Health on Friday.

Vick is one of 12 employees who have undergone training recently to perform a number of tasks at Axe n Ladder including making deli-style sandwiches, helping customers and acting as Copely's Guinea pigs.

"It's going to be crazy for the first few months," Copely said.

Copley did not give a specific opening date. He said he still has a few things left to do before he opens the doors--like find the right mix of mayonaise and vinegar for the French fry dip. If he doesn't perfect the recipe soon, Copely said the dip won't make it past the testing stage.
