Local Hatmaker Gets Stylish for a Cause

Gena Conti donates 25 percent of the sales of her special pink hats to help those financially burdened by breast cancer treatment.

Breast cancer treatment can be a frightening experience for those who must endure it.

Aside from the physical and psychological strain, there are financial worries as well. A sudden inability to work leaves many struggling to pay bills or maintain health insurance coverage.

Wyandotte hatmaker Gena Conti recognized this problem and decided to help.

Pink Fund founder Molly Macdonald is a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed in 2005. Conti said the two women have been friends for 10 years.

“She’s a great gal,” Conti said. “It’s a great foundation.”

Conti made the pink hat available on Feb. 16 and currently sells it in two styles. One is known as a Pack-Able ($165) and the other a Femme Fedora ($195).

Each hat is made from high-quality velour felt and hand sewn, Conti said.

“They’re trendy; they’re now,” she said. “The color is new and fresh.”

Conti has operated her business for 18 years in Wyandotte and works from her home. She said that some of her customers have included Katie Couric, singer Joni Mitchell and local TV news anchor Carmen Harlan.

Conti said her current effort for the Pink Fund is a way of utilizing her experience and skill to help others.

“I can use my talent and it’s a great way to give something back,” she said. “It’s nice to do something you love to do and help somebody doing it.”
