Verizon Wireless Expands 4G Network Into Wyandotte

Wyandotte is one of 67 Michigan communities added to the Verizon 4G LTE network on Thursday.

Verizon Wireless expanded its 4G LTE network into Wyandotte and 66 other metro Detroit communities on Thursday.

This expansion, which is the company's first since the initial 4G LTE launch in December 2010, allows Verizon to offer its 4G service to more than 80 percent of the metro Detroit region.

"Much of metro Detroit has been impacted by spectrum interference with a Canadian TV station that has since been resolved, allowing the company to make this significant early expansion," a Verizon press release said.

According to the Verizon Wireless website, the 4G network will allow businesses and customers using Verizon to experience speeds up to 10 times faster than the former 3G network.

“Metro Detroit: Welcome to the future,” John Granby, president of Verizon Wireless's Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, said in a release. “Our advanced technology is changing the way we all work and play. Today, it gives us the ability to move large files faster and soon enjoy smooth mobile video conferencing. But, this is only the beginning. It’s not about what 4G can do for you. Rather, it’s about what do you want or need it to do?”

Verizon Wireless initially launched its 4G LTE network in 38 major cities and 60 commercial airports across the U.S. in December 2010.

The company expects its 4G LTE nework will cover two-thirds of the U.S. population by mid-2012, growing to coast to coast coverage by the end of 2013.

In Michigan, Verizon Wireless employs more than 2,100 people and boasts 65 company-owned retail locations in more than 50 cities.
