WATCH: Man Wins $100 to Shop in Downtown Wyandotte

John Plemmons of Trenton was the final winner of the Shop Downtown Wyandotte and Win contest.

John Plemmons headed to Wyandotte on Friday for some last-minute Christmas shopping and ended up receiving a present himself.

The Trenton man was shopping at when Natalie Rankine, director of Wyandotte's Downtown Development Authority, surprised him with some balloons, gift cards and holiday joy.

Plemmons was selected as this week's random winner of the Shop Downtown Wyandotte and Win contest. He received gift cards totaling $100 to five downtown businesses, including Country Enchantments.

“I walked in and I won this wonderful prize from the city of Wyandotte and I appreciate it,” he said. "I come down here to Country Enchantments because my wife likes Brighton jewelry and I know this is one of the few places around town that sells it."

Plemmons said he's familiar with Wyandotte's downtown scene as his family previously owned a house in the city.

"Being from Downriver area, we’ve always come to Wyandotte because they’ve always had nice stores," he said. "It’s always been a very nice, homestyle-type town.”

During the five weeks leading up to Christmas, one lucky downtown shopper was chosen randomly each week .

This is the first year the Wyandotte DDA has sponsored the giveaway.

"Our hope is that this contest brings greater awareness to our small businesses in the district," Rankine said. "Shopping local makes a big difference in your community."

Officials are already gearing up for Downtown Restaurant Week, which will feature similar gift card giveaways to those frequenting Wyandotte restaurants, coffeehouses, sweet shops and bars. That promotion runs from March 23-30.
