You Can Now Say 'Charge It' at The Grind

The Wyandotte coffeehouse, in its 17th year of business, has begun accepting credit and debit cards.

In its 17th year of operation, continues to find new things to offer its customers.

The latest is something many have been asking for over the years.

“We decided it was time to add the credit card machine,” owner Rose Henry said. “So many people just do not carry cash anymore and some of our customers had to go outside and down to the ATM."

Now, the good ole plastic can be used for purchases of $5 or more. Discover, MasterCard, Visa and Diners Club are accepted, along with debit cards.

Henry said personalized customer service is a focus at her shop, which opened in October 1994, and attributes The Grind’s success and staying power to its many loyal customers.

“We have the best customers in the world,” Henry said. “We have had customers come back who once came here after high school every day. Now, they are bringing their own families back to The Grind where they have a lot of memories.”

Changes through the years have included adding free Wi-Fi for customers and expansion of the menu to include a smoothie selection and assorted food items.

The Grind attracts an eclectic mix of customers, including some who stop in daily for coffee and a treat, Henry said.

The after-school crowd includes students from Roosevelt High School and nearby colleges who enjoy the free Wi-Fi and quiet place to hang out or study, Henry said.

The Grind also garners a loyal lunch crowd, featuring a $5 lunch special, which includes a choice of wrap or bagel sandwich with chips and a drink.

“It feels like one big family,” Henry said about her customers. “It is a good atmosphere and very comfortable.”

On a warm sunny day, there also might be a row of Harley Davidsons parked The Grind.

Longtime customer Bill Sanchez started the craze years ago when he came to The Grind on his Harley, Henry said. From that day on, word spread amongst the bikers and you can find them by the dozens on most weekends at The Grind.

“We have very loyal customers who are Harley riders,” Henry said. “They include doctors, lawyers and auto workers. They enjoy riding their motorcycles and stopping in for a visit.”

Special events, including open mic nights from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and weekend entertainment, also draw in a crowd, Henry said.

The Grind always features free entertainment during Wyandotte’s monthly Third Friday events. Caught in a Zipper will perform for the Jan. 20 event.

St. Patrick’s Day is always festive at The Grind, including Irish dancing, entertainment and music. Henry, who was born and raised in Wyandotte, is half Irish.

While the recent economic downturn has been tough, Henry said, her loyal customers have enabled her to continue to employee six people.

A variety of chairs, tables and couches gives The Grind a casual feel. Coffees and smoothies are the among the most popular menu items.

Visitors can escape their daily grind at The Grind from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 734-246-6618 or visit The Grind's Facebook page.
