Cake Contest Sweetens January Third Friday

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three bakers.

Anyone with a sweet tooth is sure to enjoy this month's Third Friday celebration.

The theme is a layer cake contest, with cash prizes to the top three bakers.

According to the rules, cakes must be made by the applicant. Store bought cakes will not be allowed, but those made from a box are OK. Canned, fresh or frozen fruit is fine and there are no limits to the flavor or size of the cake.

A set of judges, including three people from the culinary arts program at Henry Ford Community College, will select the winners.

First place receives $100, second, $75 and third, $50. Trophies also will be awarded to the top three winners.

The cost is $15 to enter. The deadline is Thursday. An entry form can be downloaded from the Wyandotte Business Association's website.

The contest will take place in the front window of White Furniture. Judging begins at 5:30 p.m.

Many downtown shops also will be offering specials in conjunction with Third Friday. Free horse and buggy rides will be available from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Pickup will be on the east side of Biddle and Elm.

Does the public get a chance to sample the cakes? Hmmmmmmm!

Good question, Mary. I asked and was told that any cake left over after the contest will be sold for $1 a slice. If you taste any, let us know how it is!
