Construction Work Will Prevent Crossing Fort Street

Ford is closed at Fort until Dec. 20. Eureka will be closed at Fort in early January for up to 90 days.

Beginning today, motorists driving on Ford (North Line) from Wyandotte to Southgate won’t be able to cross Fort Street.

Instead, drivers are being forced to turn right onto Fort and are being rerouted to the first turnaround where they can do a “Michigan left” to get back on track.

The median closure will last through Dec. 20 while Michigan Department of Transportation workers replace underground storm sewer pipes. The utility replacement is part of the ongoing $40 million investment project to reconstruct Fort between Sibley and Goddard roads.

In a few weeks, a similar closure will occur at Fort and Eureka, but that one will last much longer.

In early January, the median will be closed for up to 90 days, causing motorists to turn right onto Fort to get to the other side of Eureka.

At that time, Eureka also will be narrowed to one lane approaching Fort.

“The reason the Eureka closure is so much longer is because the main draining line for the county runs right under Eureka Road,” MDOT spokesman Rob Morosi said. “We don’t have a confirmed date yet, but it will begin in early January.”
