Health System Offering Free Summer Camp for Kids Living With Drug Abuse, Mental Illness

The weeklong event is being held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. daily at First Presbyterian Church of Wyandotte.

A free weeklong summer camp begins today for children ages 5 to 17 who are living in situations with alcohol or drug abuse, mental illness or other extraordinary stress.

Henry Ford Health System’s Maplegrove Center is hosting the event at from 5:30 to 8 p.m. daily through Friday.

Different topics are tackled each day, along with skills development, games and crafts. Topics include feelings, defenses, coping, chemical use awareness, chemical dependency, peer pressure, decision making and self-care.

“Growing up in a home where there is substance abuse, mental illness, or other family stresses can be confusing and difficult for children,” organizers said in a press release. “Maplegrove Children’s Programs, established in 1990, help children and teens learn about addiction, appropriate ways of expressing their feelings, safe decision-making, and how to get help. Children also learn that they are not to blame and are not alone.”

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate in sessions where they learn what the children are learning and have an opportunity to develop parenting skills, as well as to network with others experiencing similar issues. The parent program is held at the same time as the children’s sessions.

The camps are free of charge, but registration is required by calling 734-282-5497.
