Hospital Wants Your Blood

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital is sponsoring an American Red Cross blood drive on Monday.

A potentially lifesaving donation can be made next week at no cost to the donor.

"You don't even have to open your wallet; just roll up your sleeve and spend an hour or so of your time donating blood," American Red Cross spokeswoman Martha Roemer Kurtz said.

A blood drive is set for 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Jan. 10 in the multipurpose room at .

The drive is especially important, Kurtz said, as blood donors are always needed right after the holidays.

People are busy getting back into the swing of things after Christmas and New Year's and don't always think of the need for blood donations, she said. Inclement weather also keeps people away, she said.

"Every day, regardless of the season, hospital patients need blood or platelets for the treatment of diseases like cancer, for lifesaving surgeries, or for emergency care related to accidents or trauma," Kurtz said.

"Every day of the year, your Red Cross needs about 900 blood donors to step forward and roll up their sleeves. If just 10 percent of Americans gave blood … 34.2 million lives might be saved. Each blood donation could help save up to three lives."

Those unable to make this blood drive, but who still want to donate, can schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.
