Red and Delicious, Apples to Overtake City Hall Today

The Wyandotte Business Association's Third Friday theme for January is an apple pie contest.

The smell of apple pie will fill on Friday afternoon as the prepares to host its first Third Friday celebration of 2012.

The theme is an apple pie contest, which will include a 6 p.m. judging and an opportunity for visitors to purchase many apple-themed desserts throughout the event.

As of Thursday morning, there were 16 people registered for the pie contest, which will be judged by Wyandotte Mayor Joseph Peterson, local artist Nancy Pitel and a host of professional chefs from Henry Ford Community College.

The first-place winner receives $100. Second place is $75 and third place is $50. All three also receive a trophy.

In addition to the contest, several area restaurants and bakeries will be selling apple-flavored desserts from 5 to 8 p.m. inside City Hall.

Last year, with several depictions of everyday life in Wyandotte. The apple will be displayed inside City Hall during the Third Friday festivities.

Many downtown businesses also have sales planned and will stay open later on Friday.

Complimentary horse and carriage rides, along with rides on the Wyandotte Millennium Trolley, will be available from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Pickup will take place at Biddle and Elm.

WBA Executive Director Lynn Steffensky said the cold temperatures shouldn't keep people away.

"Who cares if it's snowing?" she wrote on the group's Facebook page. "We have pie, the trolley and horse and buggy, and the best stores and restaurants around to chase away winter blues."
