Summer Camps Begin Soon in Wyandotte

Not sure where to ship off the kids for camp once school lets out? Here are five in Wyandotte.

With the choice and variety of summer camps available in southeastern Michigan, boredom won't be an option this summer for your kids. Many organizations, from the YMCA to your local parks and recreation department, offer dozens of choices for camps, including science, reading, sports and music. Whether you're looking for an all-around experience or a camp more focused on a particular interest, this list features a few in your town or one very close by. Feel free to add your own as well:

Location: Wyandotte
Name: Wyandotte Recreation, Leisure and Culture Department
Cost: Varies on type of program

Details: There are many general sports camps listed, but the most appealing for children may be the Green Box Playground program, a free supervising program that  promises games, arts and crafts and trips for all Wyandotte children.

Name: St. Patrick Child Care Center
Cost: Varies depending upon amount of time spent at camp
Where: 135 Superior Blvd., Wyandotte
When: June 20 to Aug. 26
Deadline for registration: Registration is available all summer.
Details: Kids are split up into 3- to 5-year-olds and 5- to 12-year-olds. The camp is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but a full day is 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Games, crafts, cooking activities and walking trips are listed among the activities.

Cost:  Varies depending on number of children and whether latchkey is provided. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
Where: 1258 Biddle Ave., Wyandotte
When: June 20 to Aug. 12
Deadline for registration: When program fills up or camp begins
Details:  An eight-week summer program runs from June 20 to Aug. 12 at the Salvation Army Corps Community Center. Kids ages 6 to 14 are allowed to participate. A gym, game room and arts and crafts all keep kids busy indoors. A small park located behind the building allows for outdoor recreation. Field trips include bowling, laser tag and a visit to Turtle Cove. A three-day camping trip also is organized for the 11- to 14-year-olds. The program is open to everyone and financial assistance may be available to those who qualify.

Details: Kids ages 3 to 18 can learn tap, jazz or ballet this summer at Great Technique Dance Academy. The summer program is a condensed version of what is taught during the fall and winter months. Classes meet once a week.

Details: Artapalooza 2011 Art Camp is a four-day art program available to children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Each of the four sessions will last two hours. Some of the activities planned are painting, drawing, woodworking and jewelry making.
