Incredible Journey to Midnight:  Detroit Underground Railroad Story

Join presenter Karin Risko and travel to Midnight, code name for Detroit and retrace the steps of Freedom Seekers at this important, final stop on the long and treacherous journey to freedom.  Hear the stories of brave people who escaped the shackles of bondage and sought freedom across the river in Canada, the prominent abolitionists who aided them, and influential politicians, who courageously raised their voices against oppressive ideology.  Discover the role our courts played in upholding the unpopular fugitive slave laws and how local episodes of popular resistance impacted the entire nation.

Documented hiding places, the Frederick Douglas and John Brown meeting spot and section of town where the horrific race riot of 1863, dubbed "the bloodiest day that ever dawned upon Detroit" erupted are just a few of the topics covered.

Long underplayed or never told, Detroit's role in the Underground Railroad and the abolition movement is one of many Detroit stories that beg to be told!

Karin, a Downriver resident, is the co-author of Glory, Valor & Sacrifice:  Michigan Sites Significant to the Civil War, a guidebook that includes numerous reference to the Underground Railroad.  She's also the founder of Hometown History Tours and offers Underground Railroad Walking Tours - during months when the weather is much warmer
