Detroit Electric to Produce Electric Sports Cars in Wayne County

Detroit, MI- An iconic electric auto manufacturer is returning to Detroit and Wayne County- bringing hundreds of jobs and cutting edge technology to the market.

Detroit Electric, a legendary brand name in the early 20th century, will manufacture electric sports cars and establish its headquarters in the Fisher Building. Detroit Electric will create nearly 200 jobs in sales and manufacturing over the next year.

 

“The return of Detroit Electric to the City of Detroit and Wayne County is a win for the region,” said CEO Robert Ficano. “This is another example of a company seeing Wayne County as a great place for their business,” Ficano added. 

 

Detroit Electric’s production facility will have the capacity to manufacture up to 2,500 electric sports cars. A site for manufacturing has been identified in Wayne County, with work slated to begin in August. The new vehicle will be revealed during a media event Wednesday (4/3/13) evening in the Fisher Building. The press event will start at 7:30 p.m.  

 

From 1907-1939, Detroit Electric sold an estimated 13,000 electric vehicles. Noteworthy owners included: Thomas Edison, former First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, John D. Rockefeller and Clara Ford, the wife of Henry Ford. 

 

The Detroit Electric brand was restored under the leadership of Albert Lam in 2008. Lam previously served as former Group CEO of Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England.

 

The new, Detroit Electric sports car will have its global auto show debut during the upcoming Shanghai Motor Show later this month.
