A Letter to Wyandotte Police Officer

Dear Wyandotte Police Officer,

First of all,
I’m sorry I didn’t get your name.
If I had
I would have been able
to address this letter
directly to you.

You were one of the officers
working the corner
at Biddle and Ford
at the start of the Christmas parade
last weekend.

I just wanted to thank you
for taking the time
to encourage my young piano students.

I appreciate
that you took the time
to come over
to where the kids and I were standing
awaiting our turn
in the Wyandotte Christmas Parade.

I appreciate that you told them
how special they are
for taking piano lessons,
for doing something
that most people never even try.

I appreciate that you took the time
to speak to each child individually,
to tell each one
how great it is
that they are pianists.

You know,
it makes a difference
when people validate
and celebrate
the successes young people have.
And I am so happy
that you were there
stationed at the corner
on that cold morning.
You made my day!
And what’s more important,
you left a positive impact
on some young musicians.

I’m sorry I didn’t get your name,
but you know who you are.
Thank you for taking the time last weekend
to speak to and encourage my little Mozarts.
Be assured of my prayers for you
as you help to keep us safe
in the Beautiful City of Wyandotte.

Most Sincerely,
Rubi Martinez-Bernat
