August Trial Dates Set for 4 Adults Charged in Vicious Mob Attack on Steven Utash
Steven Utash remains hospitalized with severe head injuries after an April 2 mob attack.
Four adults will be tried in August on charges they beat and intended to murder Steven Utash on Detroit’s east side on April 2.
Bruce Wimbush Jr., 17, Latrez Cummings, 19, James Davis, 24 and Wonzey Saffold, 30, were arraigned Monday morning in Wayne County Circuit Court, where they were formally charged with assault with intent to commit murder, The Detroit News reports.
The four were allegedly part of a mob that beat and kicked Utash, who had stopped to assist a 10-year-old boy he accidentally struck with his pickup truck. The four men had not-guilty pleas entered on their behalf.

An Aug. 18 trial has been scheduled for Saffold and Cummings. Wimbush and Davis are scheduled for trial a week later on Aug. 25.
A final conference for the four is scheduled for June 2.

A fifth individual, a juvenile who has not been named, has been charged with a hate crime and is scheduled for trial on June 23. The juvenile is the alleged instigator in the attack, which left Utash with severe head injuries.
Utash is awake, but remains at St. John Hospital, where his family said he is confused and doesn’t seem to understand what has happened. An online fundraising site had raised $184,235 to help offset Utash’s medical bills by mid-day Monday.
