Bicycle Reflector Stop Leads to Arrest

The following information was supplied by the Wyandotte Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

While attempting to stop three men for riding bikes without light reflectors, officers arrested a fourth man from Ecorse, also on a bicycle, for stealing from cars, police said.

On Dec. 23 around 12: 56 a.m., police observed three men on bicycles between 22nd Street and Vinewood. When police attempted to stop the three men “they sped up and went in different directions,” the report said.

When an officer caught up with one of the men, the suspect admitted to having an outstanding warrant and fleeing to avoid arrest. Records check showed a Wyandotte warrant for reckless driving, police said.

The suspect told police that the other men were his brother and friend, the report said. Southgate police apprehended the second suspect at Oak and 23rd Street.

In the process of searching for the third suspect, an officer spotted an individual on a bicycle riding east on Walnut and 20th Street. When the officer attempted to question the suspect, he jumped off the bike and ran east into the backyard of a residential home, the report said.

Brownstown K-9 apprehended the Ecorse man who was found hiding behind a bush on the corner of Walnut and 19th Street.

“The man was ordered to show both hands and lay face down multiple times, but refused,” according to the report. The officer then tasered the man in the lower back and right leg. The man continued to resist arrest and was pepper sprayed before police were finally able to place the suspect in handcuffs.

While in custody, police found stolen items in a black bag hanging around the man’s neck. The suspect admitted to going through unlocked vehicles in Southgate.

The bag contained a large amount of change, costume jewelry, a Pez dispenser, and other personal items.

A Southgate woman later confirmed that these items were missing from her vehicle.

All three men were arrested and transported to the Wyandotte Police Department where they were booked. Police say it appears that the Ecorse man is not related to the other two.

A violation for resisting and obstructing police, disorderly conduct and no bicycle reflectors/light was mailed to the home of the third suspect who was not apprehended.
