Wyandotte Firefighters Continue Breast Cancer T-Shirt Fundraiser

A special blue and pink T-shirt is available, for a limited time, at Fire Station No.1 for $15. Proceeds from the sale of the shirt go to the Yes Ma'am program at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital.

Although National Breast Cancer Awareness Month ended a few days ago, the Wyandotte Fire Department is continuing on with a fundraiser it began at the beginning of the month.

A T-shirt with the traditional pink ribbon on the front, and a special firefighter-themed ribbon on the back, is available for $15 at Fire Station No.1, located at 266 Maple.

Supplies are limited, however, as the department is selling through what it has left and will not be ordering more this year, said firefighter Brendt Frederick

Proceeds from the sale of the shirt are being donated to the Yes Ma’am program at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, said Frederick, who designed the logo on the back. The Yes Ma’am program provides free mammograms to women in the Downriver area who are working, but uninsured.

Wyandotte firefighters wore the shirt, in place of their uniforms, on every shift throughout the month of October. It was not visible on fire runs, however, as it was underneath the turnout gear of any of the responders.

As of Wednesday, Frederick said the department has sold 360 shirts and had raised $2,000 for the Yes Ma’am Foundation.

After seeing the shirts, many community members, along with visiting firefighters from other cities, complimented department members on their efforts, he said.

“We got really positive feedback from a lot people,” Frederick said.

An event that brought a lot of community members to the station, and helped with sales of the shirts, was the department’s annual open house, Frederick said. The event, which took place on Oct. 7, featured an all-you-can-eat breakfast, tours of the station and hands-on activities for children.

Following this year’s response to the sale of the shirts, Frederick said the department is already planning to offer them again in 2013.

“I really think the impact seemed to be very (positive),“ Frederick said. “We really look forward to doing it again next year.”
