Wyandotte Hires Two New Firefighters

Wyandotte city officials accepted a $616,876 federal grant, which paves the way for four new firefighters to be hired for two years.

Two new firefighters are gearing up with the Wyandotte Fire Department thanks to a federal grant allowing city officials to hire four firefighters for two years.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters grant program will provide $351,292 in salaries and an additional $265,584 in benefits for four firefighters, who would work from March 6, 2013 through March 5, 2015.

One of the new firefighters was hired on a probationary two-year period last week using federal funds, while the other was hired for a permanent position to back-fill a position left by a previous firefighter who left the department in 2012.

City officials plan to hire at least three additional probationary two-year firefighters using the remianing grant money.

Fire Chief Jeffery Carley said does not have an official start date for the two new firefighters.

"I am starting to interview for the other three positions," Carley said in an email.
