Wyandotte Home Built in the 1880s Catches Fire

The blaze started in the kitchen Saturday and spread to the second floor of the house.

A Wyandotte firefighter was injured Saturday while battling a house fire in the 2700 block of Third Street.

The blaze started shortly after 6:15 p.m. in a kitchen pantry where a number of electrical appliances were stored, said.

The blaze spread to the second floor and attic area.

The man and woman who live at the house were not home at the time, Carley said. Several family pets, including a dog, bird and reptiles, were saved from the fire. However, some reptiles did die as a result of the smoke and flames.

The house was built in the 1880s and suffered “quite a bit of structural damage,” Carley said. He’s hopeful that the owners will be able to repair it. As of now, the house remains boarded up and roped off by yellow caution tape.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

“I’m not sure what caused it,” Carley said. “It appears to be a tragic, unfortunate accident.”

With the assistance of the Southgate Fire Department, firefighters were able to contain the fire from spreading to neighboring houses, which are mere feet away. One of the neighboring houses suffered minor damage, Carley said. Firefighters cleared the area at about 10 p.m.

A Wyandotte firefighter injured his shoulder while battling the fire and has not yet returned to work, Carley said.
