Wyandotte Man Arraigned for Binding, Gagging 7-Eleven Employee During Robbery

The following information was supplied by the Trenton Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Police arrested a Wyandotte man who allegedly bound and gagged an employee during a robbery at about 3 a.m. Monday at a 7-Eleven on King Road in Trenton.

Leslie McGinnis, 62, was arraigned at about 3:30 p.m. Monday before Judge Michael McNally. McNally set bond at $100,000 cash.

McGinnis is charged with unarmed robbery, unlawful imprisonment and for being a habitual offender. If convicted, McGinnis could spend the rest of his life in prison.

McGinnis allegedly entered the 7-Eleven unarmed, wearing a blue bandana over his face and demanded the employee give him the cash out of the register. He then forced the employee into a back room and duct taped her wrists and mouth, according to a Trenton police report.

"The stakes of this robbery went up when the alleged robber imprisoned the employee at 7-Eleven," Trenton Police Chief Jim Nardone said.

Police responded within seconds of receiving a call from the employee who told police she was able to reach her cell phone located in her shirt pocket after McGinnis allegedly left the store.

Trenton police officers located McGinnis during a traffic stop. Officers arrested McGinnis after noticing he matched a description provided by the employee.

Police found a blue bandana in McGinnis' front pocket and a cash register drawer with an unknown number of $20, $10, $5 and $1 bills on the front passenger side floorboard of the car he was driving, according to the report.

Police said the employee was visibly shaken, but was not injured and refused medical attention.

"Our officers, as a reoccurring theme, continue to catch those that commit crimes against our community," Nardone said.

Nardone thanked the Riverview Police Department for assisting in the arrest.

A preliminary examination of the evidence against McGinnis was scheduled for 10:15 a.m. June 18 at the 33rd District Court in Woodhaven.
