Animal Shelter Hosts Valentine's Day Open House

Dogs and cats will be up for adoption from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

In honor of Valentine’s Day weekend, volunteers at the are hoping those with huge hearts stop in for their annual open house Saturday.

The pound, 1170 Grove, is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and refreshments will be served.

“We welcome the public to tour our facility and see how we care for the stray cats and dogs in the city of Wyandotte,” volunteer Jill Skoviak said in a press release. “The Wyandotte Animal Shelter has a core group of volunteers who assist the animal control officer in the care and adoption of the animals.”

She said she hopes people stop by to see the truth behind a municipally run facility.

“Many people have a vision of an animal shelter being a cold and scary place and we want to feature the shelter and dispel the myth it carries,” Skoviak said. “In these economic times, the animal shelter is a very important asset to the community. With foreclosures and job loss, we have seen an increase in people having to give up their animals and abandonment of animals in empty homes. The shelter took in over 750 animals last year alone. Where would these animals be without the shelter? The shelter provides an important ‘second chance’ for these animals who would otherwise be left on the streets, with no care.”

Dog- and cat-related items will be sold during the open house, with all proceeds going to caring for the animals at the pound.

Anyone who adopts a cat or dog at the open house will receive two gift bags—one to keep and one for the new furry friend.

The cost is $60 for cats and includes spay or neuter, combo test and age-appropriate vaccinations; and $85 for dogs and includes spay or neuter, heartworm test and age-appropriate vaccinations.
