Wyandotte City Council Candidate Calls Signs 'Hatred'

Signs have been popping up around Wyandotte with a message that city council candidate Val Zavala called a message of hatred.

Signs relating to the upcoming Wyandotte election can be found in front lawns across the city including a sign that mentions a city council candidate by name--in an unflattering way.

The sign reads: "Anyone But Zavala for City Council" with a red circle and slash through the word Zavala.

While the origin of the signs is unclear, candidate Val Zavala said he believes the signs are directed at him and should be taken down.

"That’s a message of hatred and should be taken down," Zavala said.

Zavala said he didn't do anything to provoke anyone to create the signs.

He added the person or group responsible for creating the sign shouldn't hide behind the sign, but should speak with him face to face. He called the political tactic a "sad state of affairs."

Zavala would not discuss his election strategy following the advent of the signs.

"I’m a chess player, and I don’t tell people what my moves are before I play them," Zavala said.

Zavala brought the signs up at two recent city council meetings.

Mayor Joseph Peterson said it's unclear if the signs violate any state campaign laws at last Monday's city council meeting.

He added any violations would not be handled by city officials due to jurisdiction laws.
