With the announcement on Wednesday that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage act unconstitutional, locals across Wayne County have flocked to Twitter to share reactions on the landmark ruling.

The 5-4 decision will mean the federal government must recognize gay marriages in the 12 states in the U.S. that have legalized these unions, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Washington, Maryland, Maine, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Minnesota, according to Care2.com.

Sara Wurfel, press secretary to Gov. Rick Snyder, said the SCOTUS rulings have no effect on Michigan’s current constitutional provision on gay marriage.

"Given that, the Governor has a responsibility to uphold the Michigan Constitution and that’s something he takes seriously and will continue to do," Wurfel said. "If voters decided to change Michigan’s provision, he’d uphold and respect that as well. He’s focused on Michigan’s continued comeback, jobs, a healthy Michigan, and our kids."

The ruling got mixed feedback from commenters on Wyandotte Patch's Facebook page.

Anna Hardy Smith said, "... It just reminded some that we're in 2013 and not 1913. This is exactly how it was when interracial marriage was legalized. And the right of women to vote. Or that blacks were 100% persons. The same types of people who were against that were for DOMA and they will continue to embarrass themselves unless they grow up. I hold little hope for sudden maturity however."

Kay Marie Thomas said, "...The Supreme courts ruling did not change God's law. So who loses? America loses, big time. How can America be blessed by God when they ignore His Word? Sad day. America is bringing curses instead of blessings on itself."
