Patch Readers Have Mixed Feelings About Unflattering Sign

A sign with the words "Anyone But Zavala For City Council" and a red circle and slash through the word Zavala have popped up around Wyandotte.

Patch readers have expressed a number of different opinions regarding unflattering signs popping up in Wyandotte in the shadow of the May 7 election.

The sign has the words "Anyone But Zavala For City Council" with a red circle and slash through the word Zavala.

City council candidate Val Zavala said he believes the signs are directed toward him. Zavala told Patch the signs were a message of hatred in a recent article.

  • John_T: One: First Amendment (and it's laughable that you think someone advertising against you is "hate speech.") Two: Grow some skin, this is politics and if you can't deal with attacks/people not liking you, then you have no business being involved in it. Three: Due to your lack of understanding of both One and Two, you won't be receiving my vote.
  • Keith Gillette: Welcome to Politics!
  • Anna Hardy Smith: The signs speak to the character of those displaying them. The First Amendment unfortunately doesn't weed out the immature. I simply shake my head at the middle-school mentality of the signs. Anyone who takes the election seriously will disregard such things. If the group has a beef, they would outline their stance. Otherwise it's childish nonsense common to politics with the high degree of ignorance these days. Grow up, kids. The rest of us will sit at the adult's table over here. P.S. I have no affiliation nor connection with any candidate.

Friends of the Wyandotte Patch Facebook page also provided feedback regarding the signs:

  • Pauline Turski: Sad that people stoop so low .... Hateful and should be removed.
  • Emily Wallent: Freedom of speech, anyone? Having a difference of opinion does not constitute hate speech.

A Facebook page was created called Anyone but Zavala. The page features a photo of one of the signs mentioned in this article. The page had 23 "likes" Wednesday afternoon.
