Wyandotte Jaycees Hosting State Senator for Coffee Hour

State Sen. Hoon-Yung Hopgood will have a meet-and-greet with constituents on Wednesday.

The Wyandotte Jaycees will host state Sen. Hoon-Yung Hopgood (D-Taylor), whose district includes Wyandotte, for a coffee hour from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at The Grind.

Wyandotte Jaycees' president Mariesa DeAngelis said the event, which is open to the public, will give people "a chance to ask questions regarding current legislation (and) policy proposals."

The coffee hour comes in advance of the Michigan Jaycees' Model Legislature event, which takes place March 9 at the state Capitol in Lansing.

Model Legislature is a one-day government/civic program organized and facilitated by the Michigan Jaycees to educate young leaders on the process of a bill becoming law. Real bills currently pending in the Michigan Legislature are selected and debated by participants who are comprised of current Michigan Jaycee members and guests. During Model Legislature, participants will be divided into two political parties. Participants will be able to debate bills, make amendments, participate in caucus/committee meetings, and learn how bills become laws, all during a “mock” session of the House of Representatives.
The procedure in the Model Legislature is the same as the procedure in the House of Representatives and gives participants a "feel" for how things are actually done. Participants learn about parliamentary process, leadership, responsibility, confident public speaking and critical, logical thought.
Early registration (before March 6) is $25 for Jaycees, $35 for non-members, and $20 for middle school and high school students 13 and up. Onsite registration is also available, but there is an additional cost.
