Wyandotte Obama Campaign Office Abuzz as Election Day Nears

Volunteers at the Downriver Obama Campaign Office in Wyandotte are increasing their efforts ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

With the presidential election less than one week away, supporters of both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are making a final push to help get their candidate elected.

In Wyandotte, volunteers at the Downriver Obama Campaign Office, located at 3509 Biddle Ave., are busy trying to convince voters that the president should be re-elected.

Both the inside and outside of the small, two-story building is covered with colorful signs supporting Obama, as well as other Democratic candidates on the federal, state and local levels.

On the first floor of the building, volunteers pass out campaign paraphernalia and collect donations from visitors. Monetary donations collected there do not go directly to the Obama campaign, but rather to help offset operating costs at the Wyandotte office.

On the second floor, they make phone calls to Downriver registered voters, hoping to get their support on Election Day, and hoping to recruit more campaign volunteers.

Heading the office is Wyandotte resident Pamela O’Neil-Emery, who serves as the Grassroots Coordinator and is also the 1st Vice President of the Wyandotte Democratic Club.

As Election Day nears, O’Neil-Emery said everyone working at the office would be increasing his or her efforts.

Volunteer Melissa Kitchen said that typically 700 calls are made per day, but they hope to double that in the last days before the election. She also said the volunteers who visit area neighborhoods to speak with potential voters, and leave campaign literature, would be increasing their workload as well.

For voters who visit the Wyandotte office, O’Neil-Emery said they could also learn more about the ballot and get help applying for an absentee ballot.

“We’re trying to do a little voter education and let people know (to) take a look at the ballot (beforehand),” O’Neil-Emery said.

This presidential election marks the second consecutive time the current Wyandotte site, which is leased from attorney Eric Braverman, has been used as the Downriver Obama Campaign Office.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to clarify that monetary donations accepted at 3509 Biddle Ave. do not go directly to the Obama campaign, but are instead used to help offset costs of running the Wyandotte office.
