Wyandotte's Wi-Fi Signal Gets a Needed Boost

David Fuller, Wyandotte's director of information technology, was busy enhancing the city's Wi-Fi system on Wednesday morning in conjunction with the start of the Wyandotte Street Art Fair.

If you're visiting the Wyandotte Street Art Fair this week and you're able to get wirelessly connected through the city's Wi-Fi system, you have David Fuller to thank.

Fuller, the city's director of information technology, was working full speed ahead Wednesday morning to enhance the Wi-Fi signal, which, when working correctly, should give Internet access up and down Biddle throughout the downtown area.

The Wi-Fi has worked sporadically over the years since it was first installed, but through Fuller's determination, he's been able to work out a deal with the equipment's provider that should drastically improve the network.

"By the end of the day, we'll have significantly upgraded the wireless infrastructure for the downtown area," Fuller said Wednesday morning. "We're replacing all the existing wireless access points that the DDA originally purchased. We're using a new technology. It's a faster wireless standard, as well as multiple radios. It provides a much more robust and reliable experience than we've had since this system has been put into place over the last two or three years. I expect today there will be significant improvement for the vendors and for the customers of the street fair. We're looking forward to that obviously."

Fuller said city staffers continuously monitor the network and receive notifications anytime something goes down. In addition, he said, staffers will be doing site surveys this week to independently verify that the wireless network is operating at its full capability.

"We'll actually be going around to the downtown area with devices and mapping out the coverage areas to make sure everyone is getting consistent coverage," he said.
